چکیده

A measurement of the flux of neutrino-induced muons using the MACRO detector is presented. Different event topologies, corresponding to different neutrino parent energies can be detected. The upward throughgoing muon sample is the larger event sample. For this sample, produced by neutrinos having an average energy around 100 GeV, the ratio of the number of observed to expected events integrated over all zenith angles is 0.74 ± 0.036stat ± 0.046syst ± 0.13theor . We have investigated whether the observed number of events and the shape of the zenith distribution can be explained by an hypothesis of νμ → ντ oscillation. The best probability (17%) is obtained for sin 2θ ≃ 1.0 and ∆m of a few times 10 eV, while the probability for the no oscillation hypothesis is 0.1 %. The other samples are due to the internally produced events and to upward-going stopping muons; the average parent neutrino energy is of the order of 4 GeV. The low energy data sets show a deficit of observed events similar to the one predicted by the oscillation model with maximum mixing suggested from the upward throughgoing muon sample.

Neutrino Physics and Astronomy with Macro

MACRO experiment operated in the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. Neutrino events collected by this detector are used in order to study the atmospheric neutrino flux. Different measurements in different energy samples are in full agreement and show evidence of neutrino oscillation phenomenon with maximal mixing and ∆m 2 ∼ 0.0025 eV 2. Also the search for neutrino astrophysical sources is repo...

Neutrino Oscillations at High Energy by MACRO

We present updated results of the measurement of upward-going muons produced by neutrino interactions in the rock below the MACRO detector. These data support MACRO’s previously published results. They favor a neutrino oscillation explanation of the atmospheric neutrino anomaly.

Atmospheric neutrino oscillations with the MACRO detector

After a short overview of the MACRO detector, located at the Gran Sasso Laboratory, I shall present and discuss the results on atmospheric muon neutrino oscillations, concerning low (〈Eν〉 ∼ 4 GeV) and high (〈Eν〉 ∼ 50 GeV) energy data. Using the Multiple Coulomb Scattering of muons inside the lower part of the detector, estimates of the neutrino energy were made event by event for the high energ...

Low Energy Atmospheric Neutrino Events in MACRO

The flux of low energy atmospheric neutrinos (Eν ∼ 4 GeV ) has been studied with the MACRO detector at Gran Sasso by detecting νμ interactions inside the apparatus, and by upward-going stopping muons. The updated analysis of the data collected until now with the complete apparatus will be presented. The results show a deficit of the measured number of events in an uniform way over the whole zen...

Measurement of the Atmospheric Neutrino Induced Muon Flux with the Macro Detector

The flux of neutrino-induced muons has been measured with the MACRO detector. Different event topologies have been detected, due to neutrino interactions in the apparatus and in the rock below it. The upward-throughgoing muon sample is the larger one and is generated by neutrinos with an average energy of ∼ 100 GeV . The observed upward-throughgoing muons are 26 % fewer than expected and the ze...
